Wide of Obama speaking 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Barack Obama, U.S. President: ++part of soundbite is overlaid with wide of Obama speaking, applause, close up of Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard++ "I know there's some concern here that your Australian language is being Americanised. So, perhaps it's time for us to reverse the trend. Tonight, with your permission, I'd like to give it a "burl" (I'd like to give it a try). I want to thank the prime minister for a very productive meeting that we had today. I think she'll agree that it was a real 'chinwag' (discussion/gossip). When Julia and I meet, we listen to each other, we learn from each other. It's not just a lot of 'earbashing', that's a good one, 'earbashing', I can use that in Washington, because there's a lot of 'earbashing' sometimes." 6. Wide of Obama speaking 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Barack Obama, U.S. President: ++part of soundbite is overlaid with wide of audience, applause++ "It's that moment, in the midst of battle, when the bullets are flying and the outcome is uncertain, when Americans and Aussies look over at each other, knowing that we've got each other's backs, knowing in our hearts: 'no worries, she'll be right" (all will be ok). And so tonight, as we mark 60 years of this remarkable alliance through war and peace, hardship and prosperity, we gather together amongst so many friends who sustained the bonds between us and we can say with confidence and with pride, the alliance between the United States and Australia is deeper and stronger, than it's ever been, 'spot on' (exactly), 'crackerjack" (the best), 'in top nick' (perfect condition). Thank you very much everybody." 8. Wide of Obama walking back to table STORYLINE: US President Barack Obama endeared himself to the Australians in a Wednesday night dinner speech calling them "Aussies" and trying his hand at some local slang. "We can say with confidence and with pride, the alliance between the United States and Australia is deeper and stronger, than it's ever been, 'spot on' (exactly), 'crackerjack" (the best), 'in top nick' (perfect condition)," he said. Obama, who has announced a new security agreement with Australia that is widely viewed as a response to Beijing's growing aggressiveness, is on the second stop on a nine-day tour of the Asia-Pacific region. The agreement will expand the U.S. military presence in Australia, positioning more U.S. personnel and equipment there, and increasing American access to bases. About 250 U.S. Marines will begin a rotation in northern Australia starting next year, with a full force of 2,500 military personnel staffing up over the next several years. The U.S. and smaller Asian nations have grown increasingly concerned about China claiming dominion over vast areas of the Pacific that the U.S. considers international waters, and reigniting old territorial disputes, including confrontations over the South China Sea. Australian soldiers and Malaysian Armed Forces personnel step aboard an LHD landing craft from HMAS Adelaide before touring the mother ship in Port Klang, Malaysia, for Indo Pacific Endeavour 2017. The ship visit, which also embarked Malaysian Armed Forces vehicles, was designed to instil confidence in both sides that the two countries could work together in the event of a natural disaster humanitarian relief callout. HMAS Adelaide is part of the Australian Defence Force Joint Task Group Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2017, which departed Sydney in September to participate in a series of key military exercises throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Running from September to November, Indo-Pacific Endeavour will focus on enhancing military cooperation with some of Australia’s key regional partners including Indonesia, Japan, India, Malaysia, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Brunei, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Cambodia and the Federated States of Micronesia. The deployment is part of ongoing efforts to enhance and develop strong positive relations with regional militaries through both dialogue and practical activities. The Joint Task Group will demonstrate the ADF's ability to operate across the full spectrum of military operations, from high-end military capabilities such as anti-submarine warfare to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. HMAS Adelaide will be accompanied at various stages of the deployment by HMAS Melbourne, HMAS Darwin, HMAS Toowoomba, HMAS Parramatta, and HMAS Sirius, making it the biggest coordinated task group deployment in decades. Indo-Pacific Endeavour will also involve service personnel from the Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force and include Defence civilians, Army and Navy helicopters, and fixed wing aircraft. The first company-sized rotation of approximately 200 United States Marines Corps personnel have been officially welcomed to Darwin, with a ceremony at Robertson Barracks. This initial Marine Corps rotation arrived in Darwin on 3 April, as part of the enhanced Australia‑US defence cooperation announced in November last year by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and United States President Barack Obama. US Marine Corps personnel will deploy to northern Australia on a rotational basis for around six months per year. In the future, up to 2500 Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) personnel will rotate into Australia during the northern dry season. A full MAGTF includes a Command Element, Ground Element, Aviation Element and Logistics Element. Major equipment to support the elements of the MAGTF includes wheeled vehicles, artillery pieces, light armoured vehicles and aircraft, in addition to personnel. Heavy equipment, vehicles and aircraft are not included in the first rotation. During the six-month deployment, the US Marine Corps will spend two or three months in Australia, mainly in Australian Defence Force training areas and ranges. The remaining time will be spent engaging with partners in the region. The US Marine Corps will use existing Defence facilities in northern Australia for accommodation and training. Defence will provide a range of support to this initial rotation and costs for this rotation will be shared under existing legal, financial and logistical arrangements.
